December 22, 2017

At the December Board of Supervisors meeting multiple personnel were recognized for their achievements.

Troutville Fire Department Captain Christopher Boothe and Department of Fire & EMS firefighters Ryan Hartberger and Patrick Scruggs were recognized for their achievements of completing the Virginia Fire Officer's Academy in June of this year. This program is a week long on-campus course focusing on leadership developing at the University of Richmond. All three were presented with their certificate of completion mounted for display.

As part of another presentation, Glen Wilton Fire Department members Christopher Keyser and Travis Smith were recognized for their heroic efforts as part of the rescue of fellow firefighter Alan Wright during the Alleghany Flooding event on June 23, 2016. Both individuals were bestowed with the Medal of Valor for their heroic lifesaving actions that day. On hand to present them with their medals was the wife of firefighter Wright, Dawn. Mrs. Wright pinned their medals upon presentation from the Department.

Additionally, Assistant Chief Alan Wright was recognized for his bravery and heroism in the same event. Firefighter Wright nearly drowned during an attempt to evacuate a family from a home endangered and surrounded by flood waters. During this attempt firefighter Wright was swept under the water and rescued by firefighter Keyser and Smith who were tethered to the same rope as Wright. Firefighter Wright was not able to attend the meeting and continues to recover from his injuries. Mrs. Wright accepted the Medal of Bravery on her husband's behalf.
